Over the past two summers, Big White has hand-groomed more than 70% of its ski runs. What Is Summer Grooming?
Summer grooming means crews are out on the mountain removing taller brush, saplings, and shrubs, cutting everything down to less than 18 cm high. By smoothing out and clearing the terrain in the off-season, Big White ensures that less snowfall is required to open more runs safely.
Why It Matters for Early Season Skiing
- Earlier Terrain Openings – With fewer obstacles under the snowpack, more lifts and runs can open with less snow on the ground. Instead of waiting for the mid-season base, you’ll be skiing more of the mountain right from the start.
- Less Snow Needed – On average, Big White requires 85–135 cm of snow coverage for opening day (November 27). Thanks to summer grooming, that snow goes further—covering more ground and creating safer, smoother runs.
- Better Snow Quality – Groomed summer terrain allows snow to settle evenly, making for improved machine-groomed runs that are smoother and more enjoyable in the early season.
