What Is a Farmer’s Almanac? Understanding an Age-Old Tool for Predicting Big White Weather and Snow
A Farmer’s Almanac is a long-range weather guide published annually. For centuries, farmers, gardeners, and outdoor enthusiasts have relied on it to plan for the seasons ahead. Each edition includes forecasts, gardening charts, astronomical data, and folk wisdom — and it remains one of the most trusted seasonal guides in North America.
At LMVR, we use the Canadian Old Farmer’s Almanac, one of the oldest and most respected editions, to help our guests anticipate the coming winter at Big White Ski Resort.
Big White Snow Forecast: What the Old Farmer’s Almanac Is Predicting for the Upcoming 2025/2026 Ski Season
Big White averages an impressive 7.5 metres (750 cm) of annual snowfall across roughly 135 skiable days each winter. Thanks to its high elevation above the Okanagan Valley, the resort’s snow stays light and powdery — the legendary “champagne powder” that keeps skiers and boarders coming back year after year.
Because conditions can shift each winter, many skiers use the Almanac to gauge what’s ahead. Below, we’ve summarized this year’s predictions to help you plan your trip.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac Winter Weather Predictions & Snow Forecasts for Canada and the BC Region
The 2025/2026 Canadian Old Farmer’s Almanac forecasts above-normal precipitation for southern British Columbia — which means a strong likelihood of above-average snowfall at higher elevations like Big White. Temperatures are expected to trend slightly warmer than usual overall, but the coldest periods will hit mid-December, late January, and early February.
Here’s a month-by-month breakdown for Southern BC, based on the Almanac’s guidance:
Southern BC December 2025 Snow Forecast
- Average temperature: Near or slightly above normal
- Precipitation: Above normal
- Outlook: A colder, snowy start with several storm systems predicted mid- to late-month — perfect timing for holiday powder seekers.
Southern BC January 2026 Snow Forecast
- Average temperature: Above normal, with colder storm periods
- Precipitation: Above normal
- Outlook: Regular snowfalls and heavier storm cycles are expected, especially in the Okanagan interior — likely Big White’s most reliable powder month.
Southern BC February 2026 Snow Forecast
- Average temperature: Milder than normal
- Precipitation: Near to above normal
- Outlook: A mix of snow and rain at valley levels, translating to steady snowfall at Big White’s higher elevations and consistent mid-season conditions.
Southern BC March 2026 Snow Forecast
- Average temperature: Mild, trending warmer
- Precipitation: Above normal
- Outlook: A snowy first half with possible late-season storms before transitioning to sunny spring skiing later in the month.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac Winter Big White Snow Report & Weather Predictions: Our Take
Southern British Columbia’s diverse terrain means local conditions vary widely with elevation — and Big White’s altitude gives it a huge advantage. The Village sits at 1,755 m (5,757 ft), and the summit reaches 2,319 m (7,606 ft), keeping the snow dry, deep, and skiable long after lower elevations see rain.
Historically, Big White receives its heaviest snowfall between December and February (140–160 cm monthly on average) and its most bluebird days in December and February.
Based on the 2025/2026 Almanac, we expect:
- A strong start to the season with solid base-building storms in December.
- Consistent snow cycles and excellent powder conditions through January.
- A milder but steady February with plenty of family-friendly ski days.
- A snowy March kickoff, ideal for late-season travelers chasing sun-softened turns.
If you’re planning your Big White getaway, January stands out for the most consistent powder, while February and March will likely deliver longer days and a perfect balance of snow and sunshine.
