La Niña Returns for the 2025/2026 Winter Season: What It Means for Big White Ski Resort

If you’re dreaming of deep snow, soft turns, and one of the best ski seasons in years, you’re in luck—La Niña is forecast to return for the 2025/2026 winter season, and that’s great news for Big White Ski Resort. Historically, La Niña winters deliver colder temperatures and above-average snowfall across much of British Columbia’s Interior. Translation? We’re gearing up for a potentially incredible winter of powder-filled days at Big White.

At Luxury Mountain Vacation Rentals (LMVR), our team of long-time locals is already buzzing. After a recent cycle of strong winters, another La Niña pattern could line up Big White for classic Okanagan champagne powder, consistent storm cycles, and exceptional conditions from late December through April.

What Is La Niña—And Why Should Skiers Care?

La Niña is a climate pattern driven by cooler-than-average ocean temperatures in the Pacific. This shift influences the jet stream and often pushes colder, snow-laden storms toward British Columbia. In past La Niña years, Big White has seen:

  • Above-average seasonal snowfall
  • Colder, drier snow—our iconic champagne powder
  • More frequent storm cycles
  • Excellent mid-late season snowpack
  • Consistent conditions across the mountain

Big White already boasts a long, dependable season, but when La Niña shows up, the mountain has historically delivered some of its deepest years.

What La Niña Could Mean for Big White in 2025/2026

While no season is guaranteed, La Niña typically brings:

Frequent Powder Days

La Niña tends to deliver regular storms, meaning more fresh snow cycles for tree skiing, glades, steeps, and cruisers.

Colder Temperatures = Better Snow Quality

Big White is loved for its dry, light Okanagan powder. La Niña conditions often keep the temperatures ideal for the famous “champagne” feel.

Strong Mid-Season (Jan–March)

The heart of the season can see consistent snow, fewer thaws, and pristine groomers day after day.

Spring Skiing Bonus

Years with colder storms can extend high-quality conditions into late March and early April.
